Marriage counseling by THE book

My wife does Christian marriage counseling. The bottom line…

If wives would respect their husbands as the spiritual leaders of the household and husbands would love their wives as Christ loves the church, all the presenting marital symptoms such as: poor communications, unfulfilling sexual relations, lack of affection, trust, financial issues, discipline and nurture of children, etc., etc. would be much easier to resolve. Like doctors, however, counselors must often focus on the presenting symptoms, although the root cause is often spiritual.  People are slow to realize and admit to failures in their personal Biblical role responsibilities.  And, by the way, as most of us are aware (my wife certainly is when she counsels couples), many husbands are un-respectable (by choice, by their actions or lack thereof), and many wives un-lovable (likewise by their deliberate actions or lack thereof).  A marriage counselor can most usually help those couples who are humble enough to recognize and accept their Biblical role/responsibilities in the relationship.  We can’t change the other, we can only change ourselves.  Counseling non-Christian, or spiritually immature couples is by far the most difficult because they live by a different standard. What standard is your marriage based upon?

Ephesians 5:25; 1 Corinthians 7:1-40; Ephesians 5:22-33
