I recall being surprised by a CT/Barna poll which indicated that a majority of people when asked why they don’t attend church, answered “No one invited me.” Many unchurched think of the church as an invitation only organization. People view small group fellowships in much the same way, if not more so. Think about how intimidating it would be to simply show up at a small group gathering uninvited. Most of us wouldn’t do it.
